How to enable WhatsApp two-step verification

WhatsApp ‘Two-Step Verification’, often known as two-factor authentication, is an optional security feature. WhatsApp is the popular messaging app that introduced two verification (two-factor authentication) for all of its users last week.

This new feature provides an additional option of protection/security to WhatsApp at the user’s end. Previously, the functionality was only available in the beta version of the app. WhatsApp by default offers end-to-end encryption for all communication, ensuring that only you and the person with whom you’re chatting can read and view the transmitted messages, and no one else, including WhatsApp users.

What is two-step verification – Two-step verification on WhatsApp is an optional feature that increases the security of your account.

How does two-step verification safeguard your WhatsApp account – When you use two-step verification on WhatsApp, it allows you to establish a six-digit password, which ensures that no one can use your WhatsApp even if they have your SIM card and verification code.

How to enable WhatsApp two-step verification on Android

To activate two-step verification for your WhatsApp account, open WhatsApp and select the three dots (Menu) in the upper right corner to go to Settings > Account > Two-step Verification > Enable.

When you enable two-step verification, WhatsApp will request you to provide a six-digit passcode followed by an email address. Although the email step is optional and can be skipped, it is a good idea to enter one before because WhatsApp will send a link to the same email if you want to deactivate two-step verification but have forgotten your six-digit passcode. WhatsApp does not confirm this email address, so be sure it’s correct.

Important Note: It is strongly recommended by WhatsApp that you enter the correct email address, otherwise you may be locked out of your account if you forget your passcode.

How to Enable WhatsApp Two-Step Verification on an iPhone

To activate two-step verification on your iPhone, open WhatsApp and click on ‘Settings’ (tool icon) in the bottom right corner to proceed to Account > Two-step Verification > Enable.

Similar to Android, you must provide a six-digit passcode followed by an email address to recover the passcode or stop the two-step verification option.

WhatsApp notes that to help users remember their WhatsApp password, the app will often remind them to enter their six-digit passcode. WhatsApp other than deactivating two-step verification, there is no way to stop this feature.

Furthermore, if you have two-step verification enabled, your number will not be allowed to change this option in your WhatsApp number within 7 days after the previous time you used WhatsApp without your password. If your number is reverified on WhatsApp after 30 days after the last day you change it and without your password, your account will be canceled and a new one will be created following successful verification, according to the company.
