TRAI to Launch KYC-Based Caller Name Display

TRAI to Launch KYC-Based Caller Name Display

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) will soon begin creating a mechanism for showing the verified name of the caller. It is expected to show the name (which was registered during the KYC interaction) of the caller on the collector’s telephone. KYC-based caller names will be displayed during the calls.

The meeting in reference to this mechanism will begin in a couple of months and it is expected that it will take a couple of months more before TRAI will launch and start testing the mechanism.

Significantly, telecom executives request their clients to complete the KYC registration before they issue a SIM card to them.

The DoT (Department of telecommunications) wants to launch this mechanism which would generate the name of the caller at the time of calling. Name as per the know-your-client (KYC) record of subscribers with the telecom operators will be displayed. DoT has sent the reference to the TRAI. TRAI confirmed they were looking to build the mechanism before but now after receiving the reference they will consider working on it soon.

What do the officials say?

Once the announcement of TRAI launching a KYC-based caller name mechanism goes live, many rumors or speculations have been made till now. But none better than the official executives could tell about the matter.

TRAI executive says that the shareholders will discuss the reference received from DoT and about building the new mechanism in its upcoming meetings. He also mentions, “Name (according to KYC) will seem when somebody calls will be an interesting concept and we are looking forward to it.” He also said that the Trai had been thinking on the same matter before the DoT reference.

How will it be beneficial?

How will KYC-based caller names impact our calling experience? Will it be even beneficial?

The basic purpose of this mechanism is to allow the receiver to get to know the name of the caller irrespective of the fact that contact details are saved in the telephone directory or not. Currently, a few third-party apps are offering these services like Truecaller, which has been used by many people but the main problem associated with it is the authenticity. These applications are based on crowd-funded data and are publicly supported, so the name displayed on them may not be true and authentic. Meanwhile, KYC-based caller information would solve this problem.

An additional problem that it solves is that it would allow people to stay away from spam and unwanted calls. Before this, TRAI has taken a few steps to control the unwanted and spam calls as they are leading to an increase in call frauds in the country. Introducing KYC-based callers could solve the problem of an increase in the number of call frauds in the country. It would also allow the Department of Telecommunications(DoT) to identify the scammers more conveniently than before.

TRAI has also tried to build a mechanism out of the new blockchain innovation to control the issue of fraud or spam calls and messages. Some Experts believe that a KYC-based system would be more convenient, cost-effective and efficient.  However, the department of telecommunications would have the last say in the matter of technology. Remember, the official conclusion would be of DoT and not TRAI. TRAI choice will be highly considered and will have great importance in the decision, but the final decision stays in the hands of the DoT.

While it will require some high investment of money and time to start the project, it will definitely make the voice calling experience better for Indians.

Wrapping up

Thus, the Telecom regulator TRAI is soon planning to build a mechanism after receiving the reference from the DoT for displaying the name of the caller as per the KYC registration by the sim card operator. Even though it is expected that KYC-based caller names will solve a huge problem of spam and fraudulent calls, it will be interesting to see how this mechanism turns out for the users.
