Due to a national “security threat,” the Ministry of Home Affairs has decided to ban 54 China-specific apps in India. This is the seventh big event in which the Indian government has enforced a blanket ban on Chinese apps. According to ministry sources, the list of 54 apps includes previously banned by the Government of India but rebranded and relaunched under new names. After receiving formal confirmation and verifying the country of origin. Orders to ban the 54 new apps were issued once more.
According to ministry sources, some of these applications have been known to either run fraudulent software or directly transfer user data to China-based data centers without user knowledge.
India bans 54 more Chinese apps from the Google play store, including the popular game Garena Free Fire. Surprisingly, Garena Free Fire is headquartered in Singapore, and the developer isn’t even from China. The game was among the most downloaded games across India last year, filling in the gaps left by PUBG Mobile’s ban in September 2020. The software has already been removed from the Google Play Store and the App Store in India.

Earlier last year in June, India bans 59 more Chinese apps from the Google play store, including popular social media platforms such as TikTok, WeChat, and Helo, explicitly citing a threat to the country’s sovereignty and security.
This action was taken in response to the deaths of 20 Indian soldiers and an indeterminate number of Chinese soldiers after fierce battles in Galwan Valley in Eastern Ladakh after border tensions with China. Later that month, the Indian government banned 118 Chinese mobile applications, describing them as “prejudicial to the sovereignty and integrity of India, defence of India, state security, and public order.”
However, China has opposed the decision of India bans 54 more Chinese apps from Google play store claiming that it violates the World Trade Organization’s non-discriminatory rules.
