Design
The design in general lines is very similar between both models, although we find important differences. On the one hand, we have the size. The iPhone 14 Pro is slightly longer and slightly thicker, which makes it also 3 grams heavier.
But where the differences in terms of design jump is in the upper area of the screen. Apple has removed the notch and replaced it with an elongated hole in the screen called Dynamic Island. This is a significant change, both in terms of design and functionality, as Dynamic Island offers a new way to interact with the iPhone.
In addition, we have the changes in colors, none is the same from one version to another. The Green and Alpine Blue colors of the iPhone 13 Pro Max are gone and replaced with a new Dark Purple. In addition, the Graphite becomes Space Black and the Silver and Gold have changed slightly.
Cameras
Another of the most important changes. After many years Apple has changed the resolution of the main sensor of the iPhone and in the iPhone 14 Pro, we find a 48-megapixel main camera instead of 12. But that’s not all, we find improvements in all sensors.
- 48 Mpx main camera with Quad Pixel sensor: 24mm – 48mm (x2 telephoto), ƒ/1.78 aperture, 1.22µm Single Pixel, 2.44µm Quad Pixel.
- telephoto: 77mm, 3x Optical Zoom, ƒ/2.8 Aperture, 6 Element Lens.
- ultra wide-angle camera: 13mm, 120° field of view, ƒ/2.2 aperture, 6-element lens.
On the other hand, these are the specifications of the iPhone 13 Pro cameras:
- main chamber: 12-megapixel sensor, seven-element lens, and f/1.5 aperture.
- telephoto camera: 12-megapixel sensor, six-element lens, f/2.8 aperture, and 77mm focal length for 3x zoom.
- ultra wide-angle camera: 12-megapixel sensor, six-element optics, f/1.8 aperture, and 120º field of view.
iPhone 14 Pro takes computational photography even further with the Photonic Engine, which dramatically improves results in low- to medium-light situations across all cameras through tight hardware and software integration.
The main improvement in the cameras of the iPhone 14 Pro is found in the main sensor. Apple has multiplied by 4 the resolution and that not only allows you to take larger images but also to take 12-megapixel photos with a higher level of detail.
In addition, Apple has included all these improvements in the new cameras:
- A new ultra-wide angle 12-megapixel camera with 1.4 µm pixels, which allows you to capture sharper and more detailed images, and improves the already powerful macro photography capabilities.
- A new front camera TrueDepth with an aperture of ƒ/1.9 that allows you to take better photos and videos in low light. Introduce autofocus, focus even faster in low light, and take group shots from further away.
- A new True Tone flash is completely redesigned and adaptive with an array of nine LEDs that change pattern based on chosen focal length.
- A new Action mode that allows you to record incredibly stable videos that adjust to shakes, movements, and vibrations even in the middle of fast-paced action.
- Cinema mode is now available in 4K at 30 fps and 4K at 24 fps.
Screen
On the screen, we also find important news, beyond the island top cutout which we have already talked about in the design section. We have two Retina XDR panels with OLED technology of the same resolution and size, however there are important changes in the iPhone 14 Pro.
On the one hand, we have an evolution of the ProMotion technology that now allows the refresh rate to vary between 1 HZ and 120 Hz. And this allows the iPhone 14 Pro to be compatible with the screen always on. Apple has designed iOS 16 to perfectly fit this new iPhone 14 Pro technology, which is only available on these iPhone models.
And in addition to this, the iPhone 14 Pro has a much brighter screen that can reach 2,000 nits peak brightness outdoors, up to 1,600 nits of peak brightness when viewing HDR content. The iPhone 13 Pro stays at 1,000 nits of maximum brightness, which increases to 1,200 when viewing HDR content.
Processor
The iPhone 14 Pro debuts the A16 Bionic chip, a more powerful and efficient evolution of the A15 Bionic chip. In general numbers, we can be talking about around a 10% improvement in terms of power and an extra hour of autonomy. These are important data considering the superiority of Apple manufacturing chips.
- A16 Bionic chip
- 4nm
- 6 core CPU (2 performance and 4 efficiencies)
- 5-core GPU with 50% more memory bandwidth
- 16-core Neural Engine
- 16 billion transistors
- A15 Bionic chip
- 5nm
- 6 core CPU (2 performance and 4 efficiencies)
- 5 core GPU
- 16-core Neural Engine
- 15 billion transistors
Drums
iPhones now boast long battery life and the iPhone 14 Pro improve slightly in terms of autonomy, but thanks to the efficiency of the A16 Bionic chip. These are the official data shared by Apple:
iPhone 14 Pro battery life
- video playback: up to 23 hours
- video streaming: up to 20 hours
- audio playback: up to 75 hours
iPhone 13 Pro battery life
- video playback: up to 22 hours
- video streaming: up to 20 hours
- audio playback: up to 75 hours
Price
One of the big changes. All the iPhone 14 have increased in price in many countries and iPhone 14 Pro is 160 euros more expensive than the iPhone 13 Pro when it launched. This is the official price and exit of each model:
- iPhone 14 Pro official price: 1,319 euros.
- iPhone 13 Pro official price: 1,159 euros.
Is the iPhone 14 Pro worth it if I have the iPhone 13 Pro?
Changing from one generation of iPhone to the next is not usual, the improvements are quite linear in recent years and Apple iPhones are designed to last for many years. On this occasion, we find interesting changes that may be worth improving.
At the level of power and user experience, you will not find many differences between the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro. However, we have a very interesting design change, spectacular cameras, and features such as the always-on screen. If you don’t mind spending a little money, it can be a good investment.
Which is more recommended, the iPhone 14 Pro or the iPhone 13 Pro?
In case you have to choose one or the other, clearly the iPhone 14 Pro is a better device with interesting news, so it would be my personal recommendation in this case. Of course, the iPhone 13 Pro could make a lot of sense if you find it at a good price.
